Hans graduated in Mechanical Engineering at the Technical University of Eindhoven with a thesis on the analysis of plastic deformation of metals using the finite element method. Following graduation he received a Reserve Officer’s training during military service.

In 1976 he joined Shell at its R&D laboratory in Rijswijk where he gained extensive knowledge and expertise in many fields of technology in the oil industry, with a focus on exploration and production of oil and gas. His projects related to anchoring analysis of floating platforms, pipeline design, finite element analysis of offshore structures, rock mechanics, dynamics of offshore structures, and the development of software relating to these technologies.

In 1987 Hans switched to the Intellectual Property division of Shell where he was trained as a European Patent Attorney and a Dutch Patent Attorney. During his career in the IP division of Shell he gained a broad expertise in patent matters in the fields of mechanics and physics, including drafting and prosecuting patent applications, enforcing patent rights, conducting infringement studies, prosecuting patent oppositions, and managing patent portfolios. He was also involved in licensing negotiations and mediation in regard of patent disputes. His portfolio included a wide range of technologies, mainly relating to the exploration and production of oil and gas. One of his projects involved building and managing an extensive patent portfolio on a novel wellbore technology whereby use is made of expandable tubular elements in wellbores, and providing IP advice to the business during licensing negotiations regarding this technology.

During his career as IP professional, he also was a tutor in the legal part and the opposition part of the CEIPI training course for the European qualifying examination for patent attorneys.

Hans left Shell in 2009 as a Senior Patent Attorney after more than 33 years of service, the last 23 years of which as IP professional in the IP division of Shell.
