Career

In 1976 Hans joined Royal Dutch Shell (“Shell”) as a research chemist in Shell’s laboratory in Amsterdam. In 1989 he transferred to Shell’s Intellectual Property (“IP”) department in The Hague; a few years later he became a registered Dutch and European patent attorney. From 2000, Hans worked in Shell’s IP department in Houston (Texas, USA). During the last four years, until his retirement in 2007, he was the Division Head of the Houston Patents Division (13 attorneys, 5 administrative staff).

As a research chemist, Hans was engaged in agrochemicals and aromachemicals exploratory research, in bitumen process and product research, and in (CO/olefin) polyketones product development. As a patent attorney, he provided IP support in a variety of technologies, such as olefin manufacture, Ziegler-Natta catalysis, manufacture, processing and application of (CO/olefin) polyketones, catalysts for and manufacture of ethylene oxide. As a Division Head, he was involved in US patent activities in all technical areas of interest to Shell, and he was the focal point for IP matters related to Shell’s global Chemical businesses.

Hans’ long career, spent in Shell’s research and IP environment, shaped him into an IP attorney with sensitivity to clients’ business needs and with a broad experience in technologies linked to chemistry and oil. He has particular interests in global patent procurement, portfolio management and strategy.

The specialist areas of Hans include:

  • Synthetic organic chemistry, biologically active compounds, chemical processes and products
  • Homogeneous and heterogeneous catalysis
  • Oil processes and products
  • Thermoplastic and thermosetting polymers, polymer chemistry and application
