Career
After graduating in the field of Information theory on Speech recognition (in 1982) and military service (1984) Karel started at Philips USFA (now part of Thomson CSF SA) developing various military products including proximity fuses and mine systems. In 1988 he transferred to Philips Crypto and worked as a system designer on communication devices for voice and data on telephone lines, wireless radio, via data transmission protocols (e.g. X25), and in computer systems. In particular the systems included cryptographic units for secure communication, access control and data protection. He continued in the field of cryptography and communications as a project leader, and from 1990 as head of the department for Hardware development.
In 1994 Karel switched to the field of Intellectual Property. He entered the Philips Patent department, graduated for Dutch and European patent attorney, and specialized in optical recording. The field included data encoding and transmission techniques optimized for the optical data channel, and system aspects related to data storage formats. Actual cases varied from hardware circuit aspects and laser control to software, system aspects and user functionality. He drafted and prosecuted many cases, including oral proceedings, appeals and opposition for the EPO. Managing the portfolio in particular areas, and tuning the IPR activities to commercial value of products involved, and matching research to extend and enforce the portfolio in the respective fields, were his responsibilities, and also responding and acting with respect to third parties regarding alleged infringement, and assessing their products with respect to the portfolio. Moreover, Philips has substantial patent licensing programs, and he was involved in negotiating and enforcing licensing for optical recording. Various court cases had to be prepared and/or actually carried out, for example in Germany, Spain, Great Britain, and USA, in which he took part as patent attorney.
In 2001, Karel and three of his colleagues founded DeltaPatents. Within DeltaPatents Karel specialized in the fields of electronics, data processing and storage, and telecommunication. His activities include patent creation, prosecution and exploitation, such as portfolio management, infringement, licensing and court cases.
Karel is also active for DeltaPatents as Tutor.
