Introduction to Patents (2 day/3-day)

The objective of this course is to give participants tools to better understand patents and to improve the patent drafting process, when communicating with patent attorneys in their daily work. This course is an ideal preparation for the Claim Drafting in Electricity/Mechanics course described below.

Note: It is also possible to follow the IP Awareness workshop and the Introduction to Patents course combined as a 3-day course.

Claim Drafting in Electricity/Mechanics (2 day)

Using many practical examples, participants will learn a structured approach to analyzing inventions, drafting claims having an optimum scope of protection, and using these claims to construct the rest of the application to support those claims.

Participants are instructed in key aspects of novelty and inventive step, and in particular the problem-solution approach, so that the patent application has the maximum chance of grant, and enough fall-back positions to overcome the objection of examiners. In addition, considerations for the US are discussed.

It is aimed at trainee patent attorneys new to the profession who wish to quickly increase their skills and confidence when drafting claims and applications. Some basic patent knowledge is recommended, such as available through our Introduction to Patents course described above.
